Do you have to be a music major to be in the band?
No. Many members of the band are not music majors, and their majors include Biology, Computer Science, Occupational Therapy, Elementary Education and several others. Non-music majors are welcome to be a part of the Towson University Marching Band. For example, in 2016 the TUMB had members studying over 100 different kinds of majors.
Who can join?
Membership is open to all Towson University students, including non-music majors. Instrumentalists and color guard students who have previous high school performance experience are welcome. The main requirement is a whole lot of “Tiger Pride” and a strong desire to be part of an energized university marching band! If you have not already enrolled in Marching Band and would like to do so, please visit the How to Join Page.
What does it cost?
The costs are minimal; the main thing being a member of the Towson University Marching Band demands of you is hard work and enthusiasm. Attendance at our band camp is required, but the TU Marching Band provides meals and housing. There is a $30 uniform fee which is collected at registration during band camp. You must have appropriate footwear (black MTX marching shoes, no substitutions) and long black gloves. All of these items can be purchased at band camp.
How much time does it take?
During the summer, we have two reading sessions prior to our band camp. Our fall semester rehearsals are held Monday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:00pm, and Friday from 3:30 to 6:30pm. On performance weekends, we rehearse for one to two hours, eat a complimentary lunch or dinner, warm up, do our tour of the tailgating, and then march into the stadium to perform our pre-game show. NOTE: Attendance is mandatory for all marching band performances; including games, playoff games, and exhibitions.
Our band camp begins on Friday, August 18th 2017 for all band members. Registration will occur from 9am-12pm and again at 1:00pm-4:30pm.
We will spend that week putting together our music, learning drill, and refining the style of the Towson University Marching Band.
If you live in a dorm, you will be given early admittance into your dorm room for band camp. When you fill out the 2017 Band Camp RSVP (which will be posted sometime in early July), you will notice that we inquire about your need for housing at band camp. All you need to do is fill out this form accurately, and we contact housing and arrange for your early arrival into your dorm room.
Not to worry! Every year there are orientation activities that occur during band camp. We coordinate our schedule with orientation officials to ensure that you are able to attend the required portions. In fact, the first performance of the year for the TUMB is the freshman convocation. Once you arrive at band camp we will provide you with specific details as to when and where you need to be for orientation.
The Towson University Marching Band works to perfect one show a season. We are excited to show off our “Beast” mode for the 2017 season!
Please refer to the How to Join page.
When you join the band, a specific list of what you need is emailed to you a couple weeks before band camp. A general list of what you need to bring would include:
– Your Instrument
– $30 processing fee for your uniform
– Money for black MTX marching shoes and black gloves (about $35)
– Low top sneakers with good support suitable for marching (no sandals!)
– Suntan lotion/sunscreen
– A Hat
The 2017 edition of The Towson University Marching Band has many new and returning professional staff members. We are still finalizing the 2017 staff; but information on the staff can be found by clicking here.
Towson University has a wide range of instruments that band members can use throughout the Marching Band season. If you will need to use school instrument other than a percussion instrument or a sousaphone, please make sure you have contacted us at email@example.com or by phone at 410.704.5485.
