General Information about the TUCG
The Towson University Color Guard invests in young people and encourages school and community spirit through high-caliber musical and visual entertainment. The guard fosters leadership, physical and mental wellness, and diversity and inclusion while promoting skill based performances that engage our greater community. We intend for our members to feel successful, comfortably challenged, and proud of their development in the activity.
The Towson University Color Guard is a contemporary, corps-style color guard with voicing that comprises of flag, rifle, and sabre, with dance influence. The World Famous Towson University Marching Band learns just one field show each fall season which allows the entire visual presentation of the ensemble, including the color guard, to explore substantial artistry and content.
Membership in the color guard section of the marching band is open to all Towson University students who have previous experience in their high school’s contemporary color guard. An audition process occurs at the beginning of May and extends during the summer clinics. If you are unable to attend a summer clinic, you must provide an audition tape. All color guard members must be able to provide a certain degree of ability in regards to basic skills in flag and dance. The main qualities needed to be a member of the Towson University Color Guard is an open mind, a strong work ethic, and a desire to be part of an energized organization!
Whether students are in the color guard, brass section, woodwind section, or percussion section, all members of the band enjoy the same privileges and benefits of membership. This includes scholarships and class credit. More information can be found through the Marching Band link of the website in places such as Prospective Members.
After the marching band season, TUMB Color Guard members have the opportunity to participate in the winter guard season. The Winter Guard is a modern/contemporary style, competitive performance ensemble that incorporates thematic storytelling in its performances. The TUWG is a member of the KIDA (Keystone Indoor Drill Association), TIA (Tournament Indoor Association) and WGI (Winter Guard International) circuits. and competes in local KIDA and TIA shows, WGI Regionals, KIDA Championships, WGI World Championships in Dayton, Ohio, and TIA Atlantic Coast Championships in Wildwood, NJ. The guard currently competes in the Independent A classification. The winter guard program has the same audition process and philosophy as the fall color guard and is open to all TU students between the ages of 17-22 years of age.
