Towson University’s Marching Band Mission Statement:
Towson University’s marching band encourages and builds school spirit by providing high-caliber musical and visual entertainment. The Band fosters student success and leader preparation for its members while promoting engagement and good-will with our students, faculty, staff and greater community.
The World Famous Towson University Marching Band (TUMB) is a contemporary corps style university athletic band that learns one half time show each season. This model allows the band to program quality musical arrangements while incorporating sophisticated and current drill trends into their shows. The 2025 TUMB was comprised of 225 members including brass, woodwind, battery percussion, front ensemble percussion, and color guard sections. Membership is open to all Towson University students, including non-music majors.
Towson University has made a strong financial commitment to its marching band in order to provide the best possible experience for the students. The band has an extremely high-quality instructional staff and a solid student leadership organization that functions within the band. Furthermore, ALL members of the Marching Band receive between a $500-$1,000 scholarship for participation in the fall semester. Additional scholarships are also available in the spring semester for basketball “Pep Band” participation.
In addition to home football game performances, the TUMB performs in exhibition several times each season. For example, the band is typically a headliner at the Collegiate Marching Band Festival in Allentown, PA. and they host the Maryland Marching Band Association State Championships every fall in Johnny Unitas Stadium.
In November of 2009, the Towson University Marching Band enjoyed the most public and prestigious performance as a participant in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The band was selected out of approximately 200 applicants to perform for 3.5 million people on the streets of New York City and more than 50 million people watching from their TVs at home! In November of 2018 and 2022, the Towson University Marching Band had the opportunity to perform in New York City for their Veteran’s Day Parade.
The band often has opportunities to engage with and support the Towson and greater Baltimore area communities. This includes the 2024 Grand Opening of the Under Armour Global Headquarters in Baltimore and a performance with Norwegian DJ “Kygo” at Merriweather Post Pavilion.
